While changing her youngest son’s diaper in the spring of 2006, Sue Wong suddenly longed for a way to make the diaper changing process easier. She was tired of holding up the legs of her wiggly toddler with one hand while with the other hand, trying to pull a new diaper out of the tightly packed plastic packaging, unfold it, and slide it under his bottom.

This son was particularly active, which often made the changing process even more frustrating. What she needed was an extra hand. But that wasn’t possible. So with her background in mechanical engineering (aerospace and telecommunication industries), she conceptualized a diaper dispenser built into the changing table surface that it automatically fed a new diaper for the next change. She also wanted a surface that had fastener strips to hold the diaper flat while changing the baby. So, she got to work and built the first prototype out of cardboard. Thus, the concept of the Ubi changing table was born. She used this prototype for over 6 months and found it to be indispensable.

The Deluxe Ubi Changing Table weighs in at approximately 16 pounds, is superbly designed, sturdy and very well constructed; we couldn’t tip this changing table over! The beautiful fabric and clean lines of the Ubi resemble a modern piece of art/furniture and will definitely attract plenty of compliments!

The Deluxe Ubi changing table arrived pre-assembled to accommodate size newborn diapers. The built-in diaper dispenser (only found on the Deluxe model) is one of the most innovative features of this changing table. The diaper dispenser is adjustable for 6 different diaper sizes: size Newborn diapers through to size 5 diapers with a Phillips screwdriver by following the directions in the manual. The changing table will hold a baby up to 30 lbs in weight. A safety belt is included with each changing table, however it is not shown in the pictures. Using the safety restraint system each time you change your baby’s diaper ensures his safety. The safety strap adjusts by loosening the base support screws so that you place the belt in the ideal position as your baby grows (usually around his waist/chest). These 2 adjustable features are evidence of this products superb design and a demonstration of Sue Wong’s background as a mechanical engineer.

The changing table boasts a padded microbial surface (PVC free) which prevents the growth of odor-causing bacteria will make clean up a breeze!

How do I use it?

*The Deluxe Ubi Changing Table will make changing your baby’s diaper simple, fast and yes, even pleasurable. This changing table must only to be used on the floor, away from sharp objects. Do NOT place this changing table on top of any other surface such as table, dresser etc. Maximum weight permitted on the changing table is 30 pounds.

Set up:

*The built-in diaper dispenser is designed to hold your baby’s diapers: 8-10 Size Newborn Diapers. Simply insert the diapers into the receptacle. Lift up the rear flap of the diaper and unfold the diaper tabs and attach them to the fastener strips.

Changing a Diaper:

*Position baby appropriately on the changing table.
*Secure baby on the changing table using the safety restraint
*Remove the dirty diaper and clean your baby!
*Pull the front flap of the diaper over your baby’s waist and fasten the tabs.
*Remove your baby from the table.
*Pull rear flap of next diaper and fasten to table so that you are ready for the next diaper change.

We all have hectic schedules and finding time for regular tummy time sessions for your baby can be challenging. How about building tummy time sessions into your regular schedule? The Editors of Parenting Magazine, a family magazine that reaches over 11 million subscribers per month, have published this guide to help parents sift through all the products on the market and select their picks for must have baby items. The Editors have compiled their picks based on the results of a National Survey that they conducted with moms, plus feedback that they have gathered from their readers over the years. Ideal for first-time parents who are compiling their gift registry and wondering what items they really need and what items are “splurges”. The book is divided into 13 sections with an index at the back for easy reference. The book focuses largely on major brand names and doesn’t include the smaller companies, which we tend to favor. The Editors did keep in mind that parents are on a budget and included many picks from IKEA which we were delighted to see.

The book is very compact and small in size so it can easily be stashed in your bag for quick reference when shopping. What is very helpful is that the Editors include important information about what to look for buying baby gear so that parents can refer to these guidelines when shopping. This will help parents to quickly eliminate lower quality and unsafe items and narrow down their choices so that shopping becomes easier and time is saved. Print out this guide from the JMPA which is the ideal companion to this book.

Highlights of this book include “mom tips” which are listed throughout the book. Moms who have been in the trenches offer their advice and helpful hints to make that first year easier. We really liked information about what to pack in your diaper bag as well as suggestions for your baby’s layette. Eco-friendly companies including Hanna Andersson which offers high quality clothing made from organic cotton and Oeko-Tex Certified Materials made their list. We were pleased to see that the Editors decided to include a feature about baby carriers and we hope to see this section continue to expand in future editions to include a wider variety of carriers including the ever popular Mei Tai design and smaller, home based companies. With all the baby products that you will be receiving and purchasing, the inevitable question about where to store these items arises. This book has a section on storage solutions which many books of this nature often omit. We like the book and music section which lists the Editors top picks in this area. Yes, there is a small DVD section however the Editors deserve praise for noting the American Academy of Pediatrics statement on TV, which recommends that children aged 2 and younger should not watch ANY television, including “educational videos and DVDs” and that children aged 2 and older be limited to no more than 2 hours of screen time per day. We liked the Editors list of criteria for what to look for when selecting a potty seat (pg 108-9) and the list of signs which indicate that your toddler may be ready to be potty trained.

The book is laid out very well and is a pleasure to read. The great contents section in the front and index in the back make finding items very easy. The compact size of the book is a bonus and it is lightweight enough to be stored in your bag for east reference. This book will make a gift for a new mom and will help her to narrow down her shopping list, saving her time and energy.

Questionable comments/content:

*We were surprised that this book didn’t address the issue of toxic toys which is on the mind of many parents today and offer parents eco-friendly choices instead. The emphasis on plastic toys was very heavy in this book and we would like to see the Editors select high quality wooden toys in their future edition. PlanToys and Haba make age appropriate wooden toys that adhere to the highest standards with a large selection of toys sized just right for your baby’s hand including many heirloom quality rattles and other toys.

*In the Keeping it clean section (56-57) the Editors list several detergents that are toxic and instead, we would have liked to see a list of non-toxic cleaners for the simple reason that babies have underdeveloped immune systems and it’s definitely a great idea to choose the least toxic cleaning materials for baby and the rest of the family. There are so many non-toxic cleaning agents on the market or better yet, make them yourself using vinegar and baking soda. Google the net for “recipes”.

*On page 95, the Editors list the recommendation of wiping baby’s gum after eating with sterile gauze by pediatric dentists as “overkill to us” which did shock us! Any experienced pediatric dentist will tell you how important it is to wipe baby’s gum with gauze or a washcloth after feeding, even before the little teeth have surfaced!

*Another questionable comment would be encouraging nursing moms to buy a nursing bra with an underwire when looking for a nursing bra (page 69), implying that only an underwire nursing bra will offer support. The bottom line is that there are brands out there that can offer support simliar to that of an underwire bra, but without the underwire, which many experts agree can potentially pose a problem, particularly when the bra has not been fitted by a professional. We would rather encourage moms to get professionally fitted regularly so that whatever style bra they choose fits them appropriately. Many experts recommend avoiding an underwire bra, especially in initial months of breastfeeding. That being said, a well fitted underwire bra may cause less trouble than an ill fitting soft cup bra, so the best option is to get professionally fitted. Bravado Designs offers suggestions for moms on their site when bra shopping complete with photos and examples.

*When talking about disposable diapers the editors comment: “The differenced between brands are minimal” (page 99). We would have to definitely disagree. The Editors failed to mention less toxic disposable brands which are gaining in popularity, such as Seventh Generation Disposable Diapers. These diapers are far more suitable for a sensitive baby’s skin compared with Pampers, because Seventh Generation omits chlorine. The Editors failed to mention gDiapers, which are hybrid between Cloth and Disposable and are ideal for the modern family. The insert is flushable while the outer cloth diaper is washable.

While most baby gyms on the market are overloaded with details which can easily push baby into sensory overload, the LEKA baby gym is simply designed to stimulate but not overwhelm baby. You have the chart of milestones posted on the refrigerator and now you may be wondering what simple activities you can you introduce that will help your baby reach these milestones? We have found the perfect book for you-babygym: brain and body gym for babies by Melanie De Jager with the foreword by Rita Edwards, Faculty for Brain Gym International and Occupational Therapist. This one-of-a-kind book offers parents insight into a baby’s development and suggests optimal activities and exercises to maximize physical, sensory, emotional, cognitive and social development of your baby during the first year of life. Don’t let this thin book with less than 100 pages turn you off. It is jam packed with valuable information and outlines simple, fun ways to play with your baby that are developmentally appropriate and do not require expensive equipment/toys.

The modern age of television and computers has resulted in a generation of children growing up with limited opportunities to engage in active play, which is critical for normal development. Parents think that buying expensive high tech gadgets are the key to stimulating their baby’s development, when in actual fact, many high tech products can do more harm than good. The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates that children under the age of 2 years should not be exposed to any screen time, including television, computers or video games. Consult with any competent pediatric occupational therapist or physical therapist/physiotherapist and they will tell you that the best way to optimize your baby’s physical development is to ensure that your baby receives plenty of supervised tummy time when he/she is awake, coupled with free play on a mat, with simple toys available to encourage baby to exercise his muscles and build his foundational skills. “Containers” such as strollers, bouncers, car seats and other equipment are passive devices and do not promote active play in babies. They should be used for short periods of time only. Many parents tote their baby around the library, grocery store and the street in their car seat! Your baby should only be placed in his car seat when he is in the car! Instead, invest in a soft carrier for shopping trips and running errands which will allow mom and dad to have their hands free and allow baby to exercise his muscles!

The author stresses limiting the time that your baby is placed in a “container” and instead replacing it with plenty of floor time, where baby can move around freely and be actively involved in play. In addition, principles of “Sensory Integration” are drawn upon from Jean Ayres, which will teach parents how to stimulate the vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile system of the infant.

At the back of this book, you will find “Guidelines for Quick Reference”. The author summarizes the sequence of development that your baby will follow from birth to 1 year of age, highlighting the importance and benefits of the crawling stage, which are often underrated. Parents will no doubt be referring to this guide to monitor their baby’s development in conjunction with regular well baby visits. The author stresses that each baby develops on his/her time line and that there is a wide range in normal development.

Many new moms and dads who have not been around babies will typically have very little knowledge about how their baby will typically develop during the first year of life and in addition, may be at a loss for how to play with their baby to maximize their baby’s development. This book will teach new parents about “development 101” and provide them with simple, easy-to-follow activities that they can do with their baby! Even experienced parents will marvel at this book and will be impressed with the suggested activities which are simple to do and pack a punch where development is concerned.

How it all Started..
It was a hot summer day. I was sitting on a park bench, watching my toddler on the swings, and latching on my little baby to nurse. I looked around for something to cover his little head (and my partially exposed breast), and grabbed the nearest thing I could find – his older brother’s floppy sun hat.

“That did the trick!” I thought, as we settled back to nurse. Hmm.. but slowly an idea began to form. Not only did it look cute, it covered me in a fun sort of way. And it stayed on without fuss.
